The astronomical transition can vary by year, time and location, so a boundary birthday may require a birth-chart calculation.

Your Chinese animal π
The Chinese zodiac runs on a 12-year cycle β Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig β plus a five-element rotation. The important nuance: the Chinese year begins at Lunar New Year (late January to mid-February), not January 1. Born January 1998? You're likely a 1997 Ox, not a Tiger. Our calculator uses the birth-year convention and flags this note so you can double-check borderline dates.
How to interpret traits and compatibility
Personality traits and compatibility pairings are part of astrological tradition, not scientific assessment. Use them as cultural context or entertainment rather than evidence about a person or relationship. The Zodiac Signs Explained guide covers the history, elements and limitations in more detail.
