The gift-year tradition, explained 🎁
Anniversary gift lists date back at least to Victorian-era Germany and Britain, where each year of marriage earned a material of growing preciousness — starting humble (paper) and ending near-unbreakable (diamond). The logic is lovely: early years are flexible materials (paper, cotton, leather) because the bond is still taking shape; later years are stone, metal and gem because it's been tested. The modern list (adopted widely in the 20th century) tweaks several years but keeps the crescendo.

Counting time together correctly 🧮
"3 years, 2 months, 11 days" uses the same calendar decomposition as age: years first, then months, then days, borrowing across month boundaries. Total days and hours are the raw count — the number that makes "we've been together 1,500 days" a thing worth posting. February 29 start dates roll to February 28 in non-leap years, same rule as birthdays.

- Book early: restaurants and venues fill up around popular anniversary weekends.
- Match the gift year: paper year? Custom print. Wood year? That shelf they mentioned twice.
