Where birthstones come from 🏛️
The tradition traces back through centuries of folklore — often linked to the twelve stones of the biblical High Priest's breastplate, then medieval traditions assigning a stone per month. The list most jewelers use today is the modern list standardized in 1912 by the (then) National Association of Jewelers in the US, with a few updates since (tanzanite joined December in 2002). Traditional lists differ by culture and era — which is why every month has more than one "correct" answer.

Every stone carries symbolism, varying by culture: garnet for protection and safe travel, amethyst for calm and clarity, aquamarine for courage (sailors carried it), diamond for endurance, emerald for rebirth, pearl for wisdom gained through experience, ruby for passion and vitality, peridot for protection, sapphire for loyalty, opal for hope, topaz/citrine for warmth, turquoise for fortune. Folklore, not science — but lovely folklore.
