How dog age calculators actually work 🧮
Modern dog age conversion is size-stratified, not a flat multiplier. Dogs explode through development in year one — roughly 15 human years — then add about 9 more in year two. From there, each dog year is worth about 4–5 human years, and the exact pace depends on how big the dog gets. Small breeds age slowest, giant breeds fastest, which is why a Great Dane is "senior" at 5 while a Chihuahua is still arguing with pigeons at 15.
This calculator uses the commonly cited AVMA-style guidance: 15 human years for the first year, 24 by age two, then size-adjusted increments — about +4 per year for small dogs up to +5 or more for giants. Enter your dog's exact birthday above and it works out months too, so a 5-year-old and a 5-and-a-half-year-old get different answers.
Why the ×7 rule is wrong 🚫
The "one dog year equals seven human years" formula appears to originate from a 1960s mathematics textbook exercise, not from veterinary research. It fails immediately: a 1-year-old dog can reproduce, which no 7-year-old human can. Researchers have proposed better models — including a 2019 UC San Diego DNA-methylation study — but the size-tiered tables remain the practical standard used by vets and by this page.
When does a dog become "senior"? 🥈
There's no universal cutoff, but the common guidance is: small breeds around 7–8, medium around 7, large around 6, giant breeds around 5–6. Senior status is a care signal, not an expiry date — plenty of large dogs live long, comfortable lives with adjusted diet and joint care. Always confirm specifics with your veterinarian.
