The 24+4 rule, explained 🧮
The model used by this calculator — and by most veterinary guides — is front-loaded: year one ≈ 15 human years (kittens go from newborn to independent adolescent astonishingly fast), year two adds ~9 (a 2-year-old cat ≈ a 24-year-old human), and every year after adds about 4. Months are interpolated, so a 5-and-a-half-year-old cat reads 38, not 36.

Why the ×7 myth fails for cats 🚫
The same 1960s textbook folklore that ruined dog math fails harder for cats: a 1-year-old cat is reproductively mature (no 7-year-old human is), and cats regularly reach their 20s — which would be 140 under ×7. Real feline longevity tops out around 38 in verified records (Creme Puff, Texas, 1967–2005), equivalent to roughly 168 in human terms.

Kittenhood is socialization and chaos. The adult years (3–6) are peak routine. From about 7, cats enter the "mature" bracket where annual vet checks matter more, and 11+ brings the senior era: softer beds, easier access, closer attention to appetite and weight. These are general population ranges — individual cats vary enormously, and your vet knows your cat.
