How school-entry rules actually work ๐
Every system answers one question: "How old must a child be, by what date, to start this year?" The answers diverge fast. In much of the US, kindergarten requires age 5 by a late-summer cutoff (Sept 1 is the most common convention; states vary). In England, children start Reception in the term following their 4th birthday โ meaning some start at 4 years and 1 month. India's NEP 2020 guidance targets Grade 1 entry around age 6, with preschool from ~3. Canadian provinces commonly use December 31 cutoffs at age 5. Australian states vary (cutoffs between April 30 and July 31, starting ages 5).
Common rules compared
| Region | Typical starting age | Common cutoff |
|---|---|---|
| ๐บ๐ธ US | 5 (kindergarten) | Sept 1 (varies by state) |
| ๐ฌ๐ง England | 4 (Reception) | Term after 4th birthday |
| ๐ฎ๐ณ India | 6 (Grade 1) / 3 (pre) | Varies by school/board |
| ๐จ๐ฆ Canada | 5 | Dec 31 (common) |
| ๐ฆ๐บ Australia | 5 | Apr 30 โ Jul 31 (by state) |
The cutoff effect ๐
A child born August 30 and one born September 2 can be in different school years despite being 3 days apart โ the August child starts a full year earlier. Research on relative-age effects shows the youngest in a cohort are slightly over-represented in support referrals and under-represented in sports selection, which is why some parents consider a later start. None of this is deterministic โ readiness, not just age, is what matters, and schools increasingly assess both.
Using this calculator ๐งญ
Treat the stamp as orientation: it applies the common convention for the selected region to your child's birthday, and tells you the date eligibility begins (with a countdown if it's still ahead). The real enrollment decision involves your local authority's exact rules, the school's assessment, and your child. The deep comparison lives in When Can Your Child Start School? ๐
