Leap Years Explained: Rules, History & Feb 29

February 29 is a bugfix โ€” a one-day patch humanity ships every four years because the calendar doesn't quite fit the planet. The full story involves Egyptian astronomy, a Roman dictator, a pope who deleted ten days, and a birthday club with 5 million members. Here it is.

The problem: the year is 365.2422 days long

Earth orbits the Sun in about 365.2422 days โ€” not a clean number. A 365-day calendar therefore loses about a quarter-day per year: after four years, the calendar is a day behind the seasons. Left unfixed, centuries accumulate: 400 years of drift pushes the seasons three months sideways. Ancient Egypt noticed first (their calendar drifted against the Nile floods); by the Roman era the misalignment was political chaos โ€” pontiffs inserted extra months whenever it suited them.

Fix one: the Julian calendar (46 BCE)

Julius Caesar, advised by the astronomer Sosigenes, imposed order: 365 days plus one leap day every four years. Simple, elegant, and 11 minutes 14 seconds too long per year. Over 1,600 years that tiny error accumulated into a ten-day drift โ€” enough to throw Easter's date seriously off, which in a calendar run by the Church was unacceptable.

Fix two: the Gregorian reform (1582)

Pope Gregory XIII's commission did two things. First, the hard reset: in October 1582, ten days were deleted โ€” Thursday the 4th was followed by Friday the 15th. Second, the smarter leap rule that still governs us: leap years every 4 years, except century years, which are only leap when divisible by 400. Hence 1700, 1800, 1900 were not leap years, but 1600 and 2000 were. That correction brings the average year to 365.2425 days โ€” within 26 seconds of reality.
