The Silent Generation: Years, Ages and Why It Got That Name

The Silent Generation covers people born from 1928 to 1945. Here is how old they are now, why Time magazine called them silent in 1951, what they lived through and why the group is smaller than the ones around it.

The Silent Generation: Years, Ages and Why It Got That Name

The Silent Generation is the group of people born from 1928 to 1945, using the years set by Pew Research Center. In 2026 they are between 80 and 98 years old. They came after the Greatest Generation and before the Baby Boomers, and they grew up during the Great Depression and World War II.

The ages overlap by one year at each edge because people born in the same year have their birthdays at different times. Someone born in December 1945 is 80 for most of 2026 and turns 81 in December.

Other researchers use slightly different years. Wikipedia lists 1925 to 1942 for the Strauss-Howe model, 1926 to 1945 for the UK's Resolution Foundation and 1925 to 1945 for McCrindle Research in Australia. Pew's 1928 to 1945 is the range most US sources quote.

Why is it called the Silent Generation?

The name comes from Time magazine. On 5 November 1951 it ran an essay called "The Younger Generation" about the young adults of the time. "The most startling fact about the younger generation is its silence," it said, adding that the group did not issue manifestoes, make speeches or carry posters. The label stuck.

Those young adults had grown up with real hardship. Their childhood was the Depression of the 1930s. Many were children or teenagers during the war, too young to fight in it. They entered adult life in the early 1950s, the years of the Korean War and the anti-communist McCarthy hearings, when standing out could cost someone a job.

The label aged badly. Martin Luther King Jr. (born 1929) belonged to this generation, and so did many of the leaders of the civil rights movement. Bob Dylan (1941) and Muhammad Ali (1942) did too. Much of the protest of the 1960s that people credit to Boomers was led by people born before 1946.

What they lived through, and how old they were

The table shows how old the oldest and youngest members were at major events. A dash means they had not been born yet.

The older half remembers the war as teenagers. The younger half were small children or not yet born, and grew up in the post-war years instead. That split is one reason researchers disagree about where this generation starts and ends.

Why the group is small

Fewer babies were born in the US during the Depression and the war, when money was short and millions of young men were away. Then births jumped after 1945, which is where the Baby Boom gets its name. The group sits in the dip between two bigger ones. Wikipedia, citing US population estimates, puts the number living in the US in 2019 at about 23 million.

Other names for this generation

  • Traditionalists, or the Traditionalist Generation.

  • Builders, the usual name in Australia.

  • The Lucky Few, a name used by the demographer Elwood Carlson and by the generations writer Neil Howe.
