Xennials are people born between the late 1970s and the early 1980s, most often given as 1977 to 1983. The word joins Gen X and Millennial. They grew up without home internet and got it as young adults, so they remember both worlds. In 2026 they are between 42 and 49.
Where the word Xennial came from
The writer Sarah Stankorb coined "Xennial" in a September 2014 article for GOOD magazine, written with Jed Oelbaum. The term spread much further in 2017, when a Mashable post quoting the University of Melbourne sociologist Dan Woodman went viral. Woodman described the group as a cross-over between two bigger generations.
The word is now in the dictionary. It was added to the Oxford Dictionary of English in 2020 and to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2021. The OED's definition reads: people "born between the late 1970s and early 1980s, after (or towards the end of) Generation X and before (or at the beginning of) the millennial generation".
Xennials birth years and ages in 2026
Born | Age in 2026 | Official generation (Pew) |
|---|---|---|
1977 | 48 or 49 | Generation X |
1978 | 47 or 48 | Generation X |
1979 | 46 or 47 | Generation X |
1980 | 45 or 46 | Generation X |
1981 | 44 or 45 | Millennial |
1982 | 43 or 44 | Millennial |
1983 | 42 or 43 | Millennial |
The first age applies before the 2026 birthday and the second after it. Some writers stretch the range to 1976 to 1982 or 1977 to 1985. No group sets an official range for micro-generations. For an exact age to the day, use the Age Calculator.
Signs you might be a Xennial
The usual description is "an analog childhood and a digital young adulthood". In practice that means:
You grew up without the internet at home and first went online in your late teens.
You remember dial-up modems and early AOL, before social networks.
MySpace (2003) and Facebook (2004) arrived after most of your group had left school or college.
Another name for the group is the Oregon Trail Generation, after the computer game many played at school. The writer Anna Garvey used it in 2015. Some also say Generation Catalano, after Jordan Catalano, a character in the 1990s TV show My So-Called Life.
A technology timeline, with ages
This is where the "analog childhood, digital adulthood" idea comes from. The table shows how old the oldest and youngest members turned in the year each thing arrived.
Year | What arrived | Born 1977 | Born 1983 |
|---|---|---|---|
1991 | The World Wide Web goes public | 14 | 8 |
1995 | Windows 95 | 18 | 12 |
1998 | Google is founded | 21 | 15 |
2003 | MySpace | 26 | 20 |
2004 | 27 | 21 | |
2005 | YouTube | 28 | 22 |
2007 | First iPhone | 30 | 24 |
Every one of these arrived after the group's early childhood. Most arrived when the older half were already adults. Compare that with Millennials born in 1990, who were 1 when the web went public and 17 when the iPhone launched.
Compared with Gen X and Millennials
Gen X | Xennials | Millennials | |
|---|---|---|---|
Born | 1965-1980 | about 1977-1983 | 1981-1996 |
Age in 2026 | 45-61 | 42-49 | 29-45 |
Pew group | Gen X | both | Millennials |
Generation lines are blurry at the edges. People born in the last few years of one group can feel closer to the next one. This is the best-known name for that blur. Zillennials, born in the 1990s, are the same idea one boundary later; our guide to Zillennials covers them.
Other micro-generations
Name | Born about | Sits between |
|---|---|---|
Generation Jones | 1954-1965 | Boomers and Gen X |
Xennials | 1977-1983 | Gen X and Millennials |
Zillennials | 1993-1998 | Millennials and Gen Z |
Generation Jones gets its own guide too. For every main generation since 1901, see Generations by Year.
Why micro-generation names catch on
Pew's ranges put a hard line at the end of 1980. Someone born in December 1980 and someone born in January 1981 grew up with the same music, toys and technology, yet one is "Gen X" and the other "Millennial". Names like Xennial give the people on that line a label that fits their experience better than either big group. They are informal, so the years drift from writer to writer.
