Who decides where a generation starts and ends?

No official body sets generation boundaries. Researchers choose them by looking at shared formative events. Pew Research Center, whose ranges this tool uses up to Gen Z, ended the Millennials in 1996 because the oldest Gen Zers were children during 9/11 and around 10 when the iPhone arrived in 2007, while Millennials came of age before smartphones.

Generation Alpha and Generation Beta were named by Australian researcher Mark McCrindle, who dates them 2010–2024 and 2025–2039. Because Pew ends Gen Z in 2012, this tool starts Gen Alpha in 2013 so the two ranges never overlap.

What if you were born on the cusp?

If you were born within a year or two of a boundary you may feel you belong to both. People born roughly 1977–1983 are sometimes called Xennials, and 1993–1998 births are often called Zillennials. These are informal labels, so the tool tells you when you are close to a line rather than forcing one answer.

Don't know the exact year?

If you only know someone's age, the Date of Birth Calculator turns it into a birth year first. For your exact age today, use the Age Calculator.
