Generation Jones: The Late Boomers Born 1954 to 1965

Generation Jones is the name for younger Baby Boomers, born from 1954 to 1965. Who coined it, what the "Jones" means, the events that shaped them, how old Jonesers are now and how they differ from the Boomers before them.

Generation Jones: The Late Boomers Born 1954 to 1965

Generation Jones is the group of people born from 1954 to 1965. The term was coined by the cultural commentator Jonathan Pontell in 1999. It covers the second half of the Baby Boom and the first year of Gen X under Pew's ranges. In 2026, Jonesers are between 60 and 72 years old.

What does Generation Jones mean?

Pontell chose a name with several meanings at once:

  • A big, anonymous generation, the "Joneses" in the crowd.

  • "Keeping up with the Joneses", the competitive streak of growing up in a large group.

  • "Jonesing", slang for a craving or yearning.

Dictionary.com now defines the term as "members of the generation of people born in the Western world between the mid-1950s and the mid-1960s".

Why separate Jonesers from the Boomers?

The Baby Boom ran from 1946 to 1964 and is one of the longest generations on most charts, at 19 years. Pontell argued that it was too long to describe one shared experience. As he put it in 2009, "We Jonesers have long been lumped with Boomers simply because we arrived during the same long post-Second World War spike in births."

The two halves grew up in different decades:

Older Boomers were young adults in the 1960s. Jonesers were still children then. Their formative years came in the 1970s, with Watergate (1972 to 1974) and a weaker economy. Wikipedia describes the group as more pessimistic and distrustful of government than the Boomers before them.

For the oldest members, the Moon landing was a teenage memory. For the youngest it was something from early childhood, and MTV arrived when they were in high school. Compare that with an early Boomer born in 1946, who was 23 when Apollo 11 landed and 28 when Nixon resigned.

The overlap is deliberate. The term was never meant to replace the Boom, only to give its younger half a name of its own.

Other micro-generations

The same idea exists at other borders. Xennials (about 1977 to 1983) sit between Gen X and Millennials, and Zillennials (about 1993 to 1998) sit between Millennials and Gen Z. Every main generation since 1901 is in Generations by Year.

What years are Generation Jones?

1954 to 1965, the range set by Jonathan Pontell, who coined the term.

Is Generation Jones part of the Baby Boom?

Mostly. Under Pew's ranges, 1954 to 1964 are Boomers and 1965 is Gen X. Jonesers are often called the late or trailing-edge Boomers.

Who coined the term?

The cultural commentator Jonathan Pontell, in 1999.

Why is it called Generation Jones?

The name refers to a large, anonymous generation, to keeping up with the Joneses, and to "jonesing", slang for a craving.

How old are Jonesers in 2026?

Between 60 and 72, depending on birth year and birthday.

Is Barack Obama a Joneser?

Yes. He was born in 1961, inside the 1954 to 1965 range.

Is someone born in 1965 Gen X or a Joneser?

Both. 1965 is the first Gen X year under Pew's ranges and the last year of Pontell's range.

What is a trailing-edge Boomer?

Another way to describe someone born in the second half of the Baby Boom, roughly the same group as the Jonesers.
