What Is a Golden Birthday? Plus Platinum and Diamond Birthdays

Turning 18 on the 18th is a golden birthday. How to work out the year of yours, where the idea came from, and the newer platinum or diamond birthday that only falls in even years.

What is a golden birthday? Plus platinum and diamond birthdays

A golden birthday is the birthday when you turn the same age as the day of the month you were born. If you were born on 18 June, your golden birthday is your 18th birthday. If you were born on the 3rd, it was your 3rd birthday. Everyone gets exactly one, and it happens in the year equal to your birth year plus your birth day.

How to find your golden birthday

  1. Take the day of the month you were born, from 1 to 31. That number is your golden age.

  2. Add it to your birth year. That gives the year of your golden birthday.

  3. Check whether it has already passed. Anyone born on the 1st to the 12th had theirs as a child. Anyone born on the 31st has it at 31.

Not sure exactly how old you are today? The Age Calculator gives your age in years, months and days, and the date of your next birthday.

Someone born on 29 February has a small twist. Their golden birthday is their 29th, and that usually lands in a year without 29 February. Born on 29 February 2000, you turn 29 in 2029, which is not a leap year, so the golden birthday is celebrated on 28 February or 1 March.

Where the golden birthday idea came from

The idea is usually credited to Joan Bramsch, an American author from the St. Louis area. In the 1950s she gave each of her five children a separate "golden" party in the year their age matched their birth date. The tradition spread by word of mouth and later through social media.

Some people call it a champagne birthday or a lucky birthday. Both mean the same thing.

What is a platinum or diamond birthday?

A platinum birthday, also called a diamond birthday, is when you turn the age that matches the last two digits of your birth year. Born in 2013, you have yours when you turn 13, in 2026. Born in 1963, you turn 63 in 2026, so that is a platinum birthday too.

The idea went viral on TikTok in early 2023. People shared videos working out their year, and many found theirs was still decades away.

The formula is: platinum birthday year = birth year + the last two digits of the birth year.

Why no one has a platinum birthday in 2027

Because the formula adds the same two digits twice, the result is always an even number of years after 1900 or 2000. That means platinum birthdays only fall in even years. Nobody has one in 2027, 2029 or any other odd year.

In 2026 there are two groups: people born in 2013 turning 13, and people born in 1963 turning 63.

Golden birthday ideas
