Adding years normally keeps the same month and day in the target year. Ten years after May 12, 2020 is May 12, 2030. This is calendar arithmetic, not the same as adding 3,650 days because the interval may contain leap days.
Subtracting years follows the same idea in reverse. The result should show the target date and weekday so the user can verify the intended direction and spot a mistyped starting year.
February 29 exists only in leap years. Adding one calendar year to February 29, 2024 reaches a non-leap year, so a practical calculator must choose a valid date such as February 28. Another system may use March 1 for a specific legal or anniversary purpose.
The date calculator can expose its convention, but it cannot decide which official rule applies. For age, contracts, benefits, or legal anniversaries, check the responsible authority before acting on a leap-day adjustment.
