A date difference can mean elapsed days, an inclusive count of calendar dates, a calendar breakdown in years and months, working days, or exact elapsed time between two time zones. These are different questions. A result is only useful when the counting rule matches the real task.
Elapsed days normally excludes the starting instant: January 1 at midnight to January 2 at midnight is one elapsed day. An inclusive calendar count may label both January 1 and January 2 as two dates. Bookings, legal deadlines, employment records, and project plans may define their own rule, so name the method beside the number.
From January 31 to February 28 can be described as 28 elapsed days. Whether it is also described as one calendar month depends on the month-end convention. A calendar breakdown follows year and month boundaries; total days counts continuous days without trying to name the months.
For records or anniversaries, years, months, and days are often easier to read. For billing periods, deadlines, travel length, or data analysis, total days may be the required value. Do not convert one into the other with an average month length and call it exact.
Two events with the same local clock time can be different numbers of hours apart when they occur in different zones. Daylight-saving transitions can also create local days that are not exactly 24 elapsed hours. Use named time zones when the event is international or tied to a region, and use UTC when a system requires a common reference.
For example, a call at 9:00 in one city and 9:00 in another is not necessarily simultaneous. A time-zone-aware calculation converts both timestamps to a shared instant before subtracting. A date-only calculation cannot resolve that question because it has no time or zone.
Check the start date, end date, input order, inclusive setting, time fields, time zones, and whether weekends or holidays are excluded. Reverse dates should either produce the same absolute distance with a direction label or clearly show a negative direction; they should not silently change the meaning.
