Privacy Policy for WrittenCheck: AI Detector
This policy explains what the WrittenCheck: AI Detector app for Android ("the app") collects, why, how long we keep it and the choices you have. We wrote it in plain words. If anything is unclear, email us at writtenchecksupport@gmail.com.
The short version
- No account. You never sign up or log in.
- Your text is not stored on our server. It is checked and then thrown away. We never use it to train the detector.
- History stays on your phone. You can turn it off or clear it at any time.
- No ads, no analytics, no tracking. We don't sell or share your data for advertising.
- Reports are optional. We only get your name and email if you choose to report a wrong result.
1. Who we are
The app is made by the team behind writtencheck.com. Every check in the app uses the WrittenCheck API, which belongs to and is run by writtencheck.com. In this policy, "we", "us" and "our" mean the WrittenCheck team.
We are responsible for the personal data described in this policy. You can reach us at writtenchecksupport@gmail.com.
2. What the app sends to us
The app talks to one server only: the WrittenCheck API at writtencheck.com. Everything is sent over an encrypted connection (HTTPS).
| Data | When | Why we need it | What we keep |
|---|---|---|---|
| The text you check | When you tap "Check for AI" | To score it and show the result | Nothing. The text is analysed in memory and deleted as soon as the result is sent back. It is never written to a log, file or database, and never used for training. |
| A random install ID | Created the first time you open the app | To count your free daily checks and stop abuse. It is not linked to your name, phone number, Google account or advertising ID. | A one-way coded (hashed) form of the ID next to the number of checks used each day. |
| Your IP address | With every request, as with any internet connection | To protect the service from overuse and attacks | The API does not save your IP address. It turns it into a one-way code that changes every day and uses it only to count requests. |
| App version and basic check details | With each request | To make sure your app version still works with the API, and to choose the right language model | Not kept with any personal data. |
Like almost every website, the server that hosts writtencheck.com may keep short-lived technical logs (for example the time of a request and the IP address) to keep the service running and secure. These logs never contain the text you check.
3. What stays on your phone
Some data is saved only on your phone, inside the app's private storage. We can't see it.
- History. Your past checks and their results, if "Save history on this phone" is on. Turn it off in Settings to stop saving new checks. "Clear history" deletes every saved check.
- Settings. Your language choice, display options and the install ID.
- Your name and email for reports. Saved only after you send a report, so you don't have to type them again. You can remove them in Settings → Privacy, and "Clear history" removes them too.
The app's data is not included in Android cloud backups. Uninstalling the app deletes everything it saved on your phone.
4. Scanning and opening files
Scanning a page. The scan feature uses Google's ML Kit document scanner and text recognition. The photo is taken and the text is read on your phone. We never receive the image. Only the text you then choose to check is sent to us, as described above.
ML Kit is provided by Google through Google Play services. Google may collect limited information about how these features perform, such as device details and error data. Google's handling of that data is explained in the ML Kit data disclosure and the Google Privacy Policy.
Opening a file. When you open a TXT, DOCX or PDF file, the app reads it on your phone. The file itself is never uploaded. Only the extracted text is sent, and only when you tap "Check for AI".
Sharing text into the app. Text you share from another app is placed in the input box. Nothing is sent until you start a check.
5. Reporting a wrong result
If you think a result is wrong, you can send us a report from the result screen. This is the only time the app asks for personal details, and it is your choice.
A report includes:
- your name and email address, so we can reply to you
- the answer you chose (for example "A person wrote it") and your optional note
- the result you got: the score, verdict, language and word count
- the app version, Android version and phone model (for example "Samsung SM-A546E"), to help us find bugs
- the text you checked, only if you tick "Include my text so the team can check it"
We use reports only to look into the result, improve the detector's accuracy and reply to you by email. We don't keep your IP address or install ID with a report, and we never add you to a mailing list.
6. App permissions
- Internet and network state: to send checks to the API and to tell you when you're offline.
The app does not ask for access to your contacts, location, microphone, phone calls, SMS or photo library. The document scanner runs inside Google Play services, so the app itself doesn't need the camera permission.
7. How long we keep data
| Data | How long |
|---|---|
| Text you check | Not kept. Deleted as soon as the result is returned. |
| Short-term limit counters (coded IP and install ID) | Deleted automatically within 2 days. |
| Daily check counts per install (coded ID) | Up to 90 days, then deleted automatically. |
| Wrong-result reports | Until we have looked into them, then deleted automatically 180 days after the report is closed. You can ask us to delete yours sooner. |
| History and settings on your phone | Until you clear them or uninstall the app. |
9. Security
All data between the app and our server is encrypted with HTTPS. Reports are kept in a private database that only the WrittenCheck team can open. Codes made from your IP address and install ID are one-way, so they can't be turned back into the original values. No system is perfectly secure, but we keep the data we hold to the minimum the app needs.
10. Your choices and rights
- History: turn it off or clear it in the app's Settings.
- Saved name and email: remove them in Settings → Privacy.
- Everything on your phone: uninstall the app.
- Your reports: email us to see, correct or delete a report you sent. Tell us the email address you used.
Depending on where you live (for example in the European Union, the United Kingdom or California), you may have the right to access, correct, delete or move your personal data, to object to how we use it, and to complain to your local data protection authority. Because we don't ask for an account, the only personal data we can link to you is a report you sent with your email address. Email us and we will reply within 30 days.
11. Children
The app is meant for students, teachers and writers. It is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal data from them. If you believe a child under 13 sent us a report, email us and we will delete it.
12. Changes to this policy
If we change how the app uses data, we will update this page and the "Last updated" date at the top. If a change is important, we will also tell you in the app or in the Google Play listing before it takes effect.
13. Contact us
Email us and we'll get back to you.
